The 'Requirements for Funding Train to Gain 2007/08' guidance has been amended and Version 3 has just been published.

 The only material changes from version 2 relate to extending the eligibility for volunteers and the self-employed, as stated on page 3.  These changes can be implemented immediately.

Work Based Learning

Work Based Learning (WBL) gives people the opportunity to gain experience within a workplace and develop skills whilst gaining practical knowledge of how specific job roles are done. The best thing about WBL is you can study for a qualification at the same time just by learning your chosen job role.

So what are the different types of Work Based Learning?


Entry to Employment (E2E)

E2E uses the workplace to provide students with knowledge and skills that help them connect school experiences to real-life work activities.This could help decided on a future a career and give learners a the skills they need to prepare for employment.

Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships teach you on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.This will enable you to perform the job to the best of your ability. 
There are different levels of Apprenticeship available, but they all lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Key Skills qualifications and, a technical certificate such as a BTEC or City & Guilds.
You can do an apprenticeship in over 150 occupational areas including accounting, business administration, call handling, customer service, distribution and warehousing, information technology, management, sales and telesales, construction including plumbing and electrical, care, retail, insurance, furniture, hairdressing, travel services, motor industry.

 Who runs them?

 The Learning and Skills Council contracts with a network of training providers who specialise in different occupations. The Nottinghamshire Training Network (NTN) has evolved to support Nottinghamshire's work based learning (WBL) and work force development (WFD) provider network.  NTNs 3 year business plan (2004-2007) sets out our strategy to transform the WBL/WFD sector to be more responsive to employer and employee needs.

Train To Gain

Train to Gain (T2G) is a service to help businesses across England get the training they need to succeed and stay successful.  The introduction of Train to Gain is a major step-change in enabling employers to develop the skills of their employees and, in doing so, improve business performance.

A Train to Gain learner is an adult learner [19+] whose learning is enabled, sponsored or facilitated by their employer. To be eligible for Train to Gain learners must not have achieved NVQ Level 2 or equivalent. Learners can also do basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy qualification before progressing onto Level 2.
At present the T2G consortia deliver training across East Midlands and in the first year of this contract (2006/2007) the consortia delivered training to over 800 learners and have engaged with over 250 employers.
